The links below are to pages I find helpful not perfect; I hardly agree with all of these sites’ content.  They are useful for providing illustrations and different perspectives. I include many of these links because they provide the “other side” of the conversation in which I’m engaged.

I’m on a personal mission to reclaim helpful church tradition for a good and useful purpose while discarding those which are destructive.  This is why there is an abundance of links from more liturgical and historical churches.  These churches have been in the business of sacred study and art longer than any evangelical or protestant.  We do well to raid their storehouses for the furtherance of God’s kingdom.

  • Bible Art – Great indexed resource of sacred art and biblical illustrations.
  • Brehm Center – Fuller Seminary’s center for art and media. Download free Bible study guides for recent movies here and read about their ministry of dialoge at the LA Film Festival.
  • Dore Bible Gallery – This site has art from Gustave Dore indexed by Bible passage.
  • eBible Teacher – Images for the computer in the bible class including NASA satellite photos of the Holy Land.
  • Israelimages.com – Israel’s leading collection of pictures and images about the Holy Land and Israel.
  • National Gallery of Art – The National Gallery of Art, Washington houses one of the finest collections in the world illustrating major achievements in painting, sculpture, and graphic arts from the Middle Ages to the present. Many are viewable in high resolution online!
  • Vanderbilt Library’s Art In the Christian Tradition – This is a great database of over 2,500 sacred art pieces.

Bible Study Resources

  • Blue Letter Bible – This website is easy to use, has many of the most popular translations and a great collection of original language tools, Bible dictionaries and many other resources.
  • CCEL – Christian Classics Ethereal Library is a collection of public domain Christian works.  These works range from the early church fathers translated from the original Greek to contemporary classics.  An informed search is needed to find what you want as the topic browse is week, but it’s worth navigating to access or download their full text book files.
  • Crosswalk – My favorite online study site, this is one of the very few that has the New Revised Standard Version online and available for searching. The interface here is more complex but it’s resources are very thorough.
  • Dimensions of the Faith – Free home Bible, church history, and theology courses available through Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Ockenga Institute.  There are several courses available and when all area completed a certificate of completion can be obtained.  These courses are modified versions of their graduate level seminary classes.
  • New Testament Gateway – More scholarly and advanced, this website has very current articles and links regarding research in the New Testament, it’s text and historical setting.

Ministry Resources

  • Abilene Christian University’s Ministry Resources – Excellent site for “ministry business” (i.e. salary reports, longevity reports, etc.) and for ministry resources (i.e. curriculum for marriage preparation, youth, etc.)
  • Homiletics Online – A pay website with the best most current sermon illustrations, research, PowerPoints and other preaching resources. I use this website simply for the illustrations and it’s worth the subscription.

Personal Resources (Counseling, Addiction Support, Marital Help, etc.)

  • Celebrate Recovery Group Listing – Celebrate Recovery has quickly become the Christian twelve-step program for overcoming “hurts, hangups and habits.”  Use this link to find a Celebrate Recovery group in your area.
  • Christian Family Institute – Christian counseling center in Bowling Green, KY with an excellent reputation for personal and marriage counseling.
  • Savemymarriage.com – Marriages in crisis should click here before making any final decisions.  Savemymarriage.com is supported by Family Dynamics (formerly “His Needs, Her Needs”) and boasts a 75% success rates for couples in crisis who attend their conference.
  • The RAVE Project – Excellent online resource for all things related to helping those in relationships plagued with domestic violence.

Guided Prayer and Devotions

  • Drive Time Devotions -  A ministry of Saddleback Church that takes a text and offers a nice insight for your day.  These installments are about five minutes and available on Podcast here or through their online player.
  • Pray-As-You-Go – A daily podcast (search for it on iTunes or click here) available from the Jesuit Media Initiatives in Britain.  This eclectic podcast mixes sacred choral music, contemporary reflective pieces and the daily gospel reading with reflection questions.  Each installment is about 10 minutes and is best listened to when you have a few minutes to close your eyes and truly engage your mind.
  • Sacred Space – A prayer site, updated daily, which guides you through a ten minute session of prayer, centered on a passage of scripture chosen specially for the day.

Fasting

  • Guide to Fasting – Bill Bright’s foundational work on the practice of modern fasting and the application of it to our daily lives.

Using Icons in Prayer

  • Praying with Icons – Excerpt from Jim Flier’s book on his website helpful to understanding the practice of praying through icons.
  • Icons Explained – A more technical and mechanical description of icons themselves and their significance.
