Help For Haiti

I don’t know who coined the term “slacktivism” but I like it.  A slacktivist is an informed person who watches with pity a tragedy at a distance and feels that by being informed they are helping.  The problem is that watching the news, reading blogs, and staying informed is not helping.  Too many watch Haiti from a distance, have pity and by feeling sorry they feel they did something. Information and pity don’t help, what helps is money, time and prayer.  While we wish it was more, I’m proud that our church is doing something this Sunday to help the people of Haiti. We will be giving 25% of our total offering directly to a mission we support in Northwest Haiti who is assisting with the tragedy in the Port-Au-Prince and surrounding area.

I encourage everyone to get involved and help.  A great place to do that is by supporting an agency that is helping, one such agency is Northwest Haiti Christian Mission.  They are presently sending a team to Port-Au-Prince with medical staff to assist in this disaster.  You can read about some of their work through a staff person’s blog at: http://castilloavektimoun.wordpress.com/.  You can also see pictures and stay informed about the disaster there as well, but let that information move you to action.

This Sunday we showed a trailer for Fireproof, I wanted to share it here for those who missed it.  Pass this along to friends, family and anyone who hasn’t seen it!  Also, don’t forget to register for Saturday’s movie night starting at 6:30pm where you can watch more than the trailer.  Register for Bowling Green Christian Church’s movie night by clicking here!

See You At The Pole

This may be a little late, but I thought I would share this as I mentioned it Sunday.  Last week I attended the Greenwood High School gathering for See You At The Pole.  This was really the first of these types of events I’ve ever attended and I was thoroughly impressed with the students who lead this.  It was a quite, respectful, stand – showing a commitment to prayer.  The best part was that this was almost entirely student driven!  The students spoke, sang, prayed and it was great.  I snapped this picture on my phone that I thought captured the morning.

“Indeed, we live as human beings, but we do not wage war according to human standards; for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

Back Story Into Society of St. Pius X

I recently posted about Pope Benedict’s reinstatement of previously excommunicated bishops, that was only half the story. The entire society which these bishops are associated with has a much more sordid history than meets the eye.  Posted on the Faithful Progressive is an excellent article summarizing this, it is a bit disturbing to see the Catholic church work towards unity with a group as divisive as St. Pius X.  The excommunication was appropriately applied and inappropriately lifted.  Church discipline is given to the church for a reason. How can discipline be lifted without repentance?  The Vatican has called on the bishop to recant his statements; this should have been done prior – to do so know seems token and insincere.
