Comically enough I took “Children’s Literature” as my English requirement in college, it was here that I was introduced to David Wiesner’s book The Three Little Pigs. His rendition starts out as any other version of the classic fairytale but when the Big Bad Wolf huffs and puffs he blows the first little pig out of the story. This pig then grabs his two brothers and together they run through story after story until returning home. The illustrations are beautiful and the story clever. He won a Caldecott Medal for this piece and previously had won one for Tuesday a book about flying frogs and aliens. Both of these books are clever and excite the imagination. His latest book Flotsam is also an instant classic and Caldecott Medal winner. This book follows the journey of an underwater camera across the world and to the bottom of the ocean. Like his others, Flotsam is masterfully illustrated and beyond creative in its story. These simply books are enjoyed by children and admired by adults. I recommend these stories to you for bedtime or story time!
